A Pattern of Drug Use and Health Status Among the Elderly in a Korean Rural Community(Kangwha County)




Abstract
A survey on drug use and health status in the elderly was made in a Korean rural area. The subjects were 1005 men and women who are 65 years old or older. The results were summarized as follows ;
1. Overall 59.1% of the subjects were taking some drug within 4 weeks of the interview 62.8% of women and 54.0% of men.
2. Overall drug use tended to decrease with increasing age : 621% in the 65 to 74 year age group ; 55.2% in the 75 to 84 year age group , 48.0% in the 85 year or older age group.
3. The most common classes of drugs used by the elderly were cold medicine (24.7%o), anti-arthritic or antineuralgic drugs (19.8%), vitamins or "hepatic function promoting drugs"(13.6%), oral analgesics (11.6%). Herb drugs amounted to 3.2%.
4. The most common symptoms and diseases reported by the subjects were arthritis (59.6%), lumbago(39.6%), muscle weakness(34.1%), numbness in arms or legs(28.6%) and dizziness (24.8%).
5. More women were suffering from arthritis, rheumatism, anemia, lumbago and muscle weakness than the men. The latter suffered more from asthma than the former.
